Downtown Toronto
Downtown Toronto can be divided into two different areas – Downtown East and
Downtown West.
Queen’s Park, Bloor Street East, Wellesley Street East, and Dundas Street East are
all used as boundaries when referring to Downtown East. It’s here that the iconic
Maple Leaf Gardens, now converted into a Loblaws and athletic facility for Ryerson
University. Given that Ryerson is located just behind the Gardens, there are a
number of students in this neighbourhood, and that leads to many rental units
consistently on the market, and lots of housing and investment opportunities. Due
to the high supply of rental inventory on the market, this is also a popular area for
singles and couples.
Toronto’s Downtown West is by far Toronto’s most boisterous and active
neighbourhood. This is the hub of entertainment, fashion, and financial districts
within Toronto and those who want to live where it all happens often make this
their Toronto neighbourhood to call home. Although, that hasn’t always been easy
to do.
Historically, Downtown West was also the concrete jungle portion of the city,
making it challenging for some buyers to find a home. With landmarks such as the
CN Tower, and the home of the Toronto Blue Jays, Rogers Centre, there simply
wasn’t a lot of residential space. However, in recent years the commercial buildings
on King-Spadina have been rezoned into residential lofts, and this particular of
downtown has seen one of the biggest increases in townhomes and condos during
the most recent housing boom.
Because Downtown West does include so many different areas and districts,
the people who live, work and play in this area all come from vastly different
backgrounds and bring their own flavour to the area. This is what also makes
Downtown West one of the most diverse areas of Toronto to live.
Toronto is Canada’s largest city. And so it goes without saying that those who
truly want to be right in the thick of it all need to live in Toronto’s downtown core.
Whether it’s east or west, each of these areas offers many types of great housing;
and many things to do when it’s time to get out of the house!
